Vedic Astrology—or Jyotish Shastra—is one of the oldest and most precise astrological systems in the world. But if you're new to it, a Vedic horoscope can look like a puzzle filled with strange symbols and complex charts.
This beginner’s guide is here to change that.
At Agama Shakti, we help curious minds from around the world understand the spiritual and logical beauty of Jyotish. In this article, I’ll show you how to read a Vedic chart step by step, even if you’ve never looked at one before.
1. What Is a Vedic Horoscope (Kundli)?
A Vedic horoscope is a map of the sky at the moment of your birth, showing:
The Ascendant sign (Lagna) — your rising sign
The positions of the 9 Vedic planets
The 12 houses (Bhavas) representing life areas like career, relationships, health, etc.
🪐 Unlike Western astrology, Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which aligns with actual constellations.
2. The Essentials You Need to Cast a Vedic Chart
To read or create a Vedic horoscope, you must know:
Birth Date
Exact Birth Time
Birth Place
🔍 Why is birth time so important? Because even a few minutes’ difference can change the Ascendant, which shifts all the house positions and predictions.
3. What if You Don’t Know Your Exact Birth Time?
Don’t worry. Vedic astrology offers Birth Time Rectification—a process where an astrologer uses major life events to estimate your time of birth with accuracy.
👉 If you need help with this, you can contact Agama Shakti for a professional rectification session.
4. Start With the Ascendant (Lagna)
The Ascendant is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born.
It sets the tone for your entire chart—how the houses are distributed, and how your planets behave.
For example:
A Leo Ascendant will have Sun as its chart ruler, bringing leadership traits.
A Capricorn Ascendant will focus on discipline and structured growth.
🧭 Your entire personality, physical appearance, and life path begin here.
5. Learn the 12 Houses and What They Represent
Each chart is divided into 12 houses, which represent different areas of life:
1st House – Self, Body, Mind
2nd House – Wealth, Speech, Family
3rd House – Siblings, Courage, Efforts
4th House – Mother, Emotions, Property
5th House – Creativity, Children, Past Life
6th House – Enemies, Illness, Service
7th House – Marriage, Business Partners
8th House – Transformation, Longevity
9th House – Luck, Dharma, Father
10th House – Career, Fame, Public Image
11th House – Gains, Desires, Networks
12th House – Losses, Moksha, Foreign Lands
🪔 These houses form the foundation of Jyotish analysis.
6. Know the Nine Grahas (Planets) in Vedic Astrology
The 9 Grahas are:
☀ Sun (Surya) – Soul, authority
🌙 Moon (Chandra) – Mind, emotions
♂ Mars (Mangala) – Energy, courage
☿ Mercury (Budh) – Intellect, speech
♃ Jupiter (Guru) – Wisdom, fortune
♄ Saturn (Shani) – Karma, discipline
☊ Rahu – Desires, illusion (North Node)
☋ Ketu – Detachment, past karma (South Node)
♀ Venus (Shukra) – Love, comfort
Each planet rules specific houses depending on the Ascendant, and their strength and placement tell you a lot about life events.
7. Next Step: Dashas (Timing of Events)
You may be wondering—when will these life areas be activated?
That’s where Dashas come in. The most commonly used system is:
🔄 Vimshottari Dasha
A 120-year cycle that divides life into planetary periods.
Each period activates specific areas of your chart.
The running Mahadasha and Antardasha show the current karma you're experiencing.
📆 This system makes Vedic astrology more time-specific than Western astrology.
8. Final Step: Synthesizing the Chart
Reading a chart means blending:
Planet placements (house + sign)
Planetary strengths
House lords and their interactions
Dashas (timing)
Yogas (special combinations)
It’s like reading a story, where the planets are characters, houses are scenes, and dashas are the timeline.
🎓 At Agama Shakti, we teach this in a clear, step-by-step way through our beginner courses.
